Opus Magnum Grant
01.03.2016
Prof. Schuetze has received an Opus Magnum grant from VolkswagenStiftung. The grant provides funds for writing a book, tentatively entitled "In the Beginning Was Not the Word", that will put forward a new theory about the fundamental building blocks (the atoms) of language. It is often assumed that words are the basic units of language, but this assumption is at the root of many problems that theoretical and computational linguists face today. One such problem is that the notion of word is hard to reconcile with machine learning methods that are end-to-end.
The project will start on April 1st and Dr. Benjamin Roth (currently at UMass Amherst) will be Acting Professor of Computational Linguistics for the duration of the grant.
